The first film grossed over $251 million on an estimated budget of only $69 million. That is quite impressive for an animated film that wasn’t a sequel or an adaptation of a comic/show/book. It’s no surprise Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment were so eager to get another film off the ground. While I personally wasn’t a fan of the first film, I can certainly see why people enjoyed it.
